A new mural depicting East Fremantle’s iconic locations will soon be revealed in Glasson Park as part of the Town’s commitment to public art and will also feature in a new Community Calendar for 2021, available for the community in early December, and also available online.

In August 2020, the Town’s Public Art Panel, headed by Deputy Mayor Jenny Harrington, decided on a refresh of the Glasson Park mural, and approached White Gum Valley artist Jessee Lee Johns to design a mural that would feature a composite image of many of the Town’s key visual icons.

The draft design was shared with the community in October, and submissions were invited from residents who nominated locations in the Town for inclusion in the new work.

Mr Johns entitled the work: Portrait of East Fremantle: An idiosyncratic visual survey of the built environment arising from a series of jaunts through the town between 2017 and 2020, and based on community feedback, he included the following East Fremantle iconic locations in the design:

  • Town Hall and former Plympton Post Office
  • Bougainvillea on George Street
  • Canning Highway – house with ‘Freo Dockers’ garage door
  • Glasson Park
  • Leeuwin Barracks
  • The Left Bank and Tradewinds Hotel
  • Locke Park’s gazebo
  • Richmond Raceway
  • Royal George Hotel’s roof/spire
  • Shark Park
  • Swan River – at Camp Waller
  • Local schools
  • and more.

Cr Harrington said: “One of the delightful aspects of this work is that viewers can identify all the local landmarks featured in the work, it builds visual recognition of our Town’s unique streetscape.”

The new work will replace the current mural at Glasson Park which is a magnet for the Town’s local children who gather there after school with their friends and family.  It will also be featured on the May page of the Town’s new Community Calendar for 2021 entitled “Streets of Your Town” and features the Town’s many public art works.

Cr Harrington explained that the Calendar is a new initiative for the Town that brings together commissioned public murals and sculptures as well as some painted on private homes, with the details included in a map so that residents of and visitors to the Town can curate their own public art tour and see the works for themselves.”

She explained that the Town prioritised public art, with Council guided by the Public Art Panel who advise on new commissions.  The Town requires that all development proposals with a value in excess of $3 million are required to include public art within the project scope.  She said the recent installation of art works in the Town recalling its horse racing history had been a big hit with locals, and she was sure the newest acquisition would prove just as popular.

She said the Calendar would be a useful resource for residents as it compiles contact info for Ward representatives and the local library, waste and recycling information, a community and sporting clubs directory and a map of the Town featuring facilities.

The 2021 Community Calendar, Streets of Your Town, is free for all residents of the Town of East Fremantle and will be available for collection from Monday 7 December 2020 from the Town Hall at 135 Canning Highway.
