Changes to verge collections in 2026/27

At its Ordinary Council Meeting in March, Council endorsed trialing the on-demand Verge Valet service for two years from 1 July 2026.

The trial follows an internal review of the Town's bulk verge waste collection service, which has traditionally offered two green waste collections and one white and metal goods collection on set dates each year.

In recent years, it has become difficult for the Town to secure a contractor to deliver the service, resulting in increased costs and reduced flexibility around collection dates.

Trialing an on-demand, bulk waste service better reflects the evolving needs of our community and strengthens our commitment to sustainable waste management.

The trial will run from 1 July 2026 until 30 June 2028, allowing time for the Town to understand how residents use the service. It will also provide data about likely costs and operational impacts to help inform a long-term service model.

Residents will continue to receive one tip pass each financial year to the Henderson Waste Recovery Park and continue to have access to the Fremantle Recycling Centre.

Booking details for trial Verge Valet collection

Bookings for the on-demand service will be available from Wednesday 1 July 2026, with Verge Valet expected to begin collections in August on the Town’s behalf.

Residents will be able to book two green waste collections and one white and metal goods collection each financial year. Bookings will be made through the Verge Valet website or by phone.

More information about the booking process to be provided closer to the date.

At the end of the two-year trial period, the Town will conduct a review to assess factors such as the uptake, cost and community satisfaction of the service.

Sustainability

Bulk verge collections are intended for items that have reached end-of-life. Join the circular economy movement by rehoming, donating or selling items that are still usable.

  • Fremantle Recycling Centre accepts quality donations to re-sell in their Reuse Shop
  • Consider Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or local Buy Nothing groups
  • Donate to a local charity organisation
  • Consider being part of the Circular Fashion Initiative movement or donating good quality, unneeded clothing to the annual yellow bag collections through Good Sammy. Keep an eye out for flyers and bags coming to your letterbox. Next collection coming June 2026.
  • Help animals in need by donating items to RSPCA or contact your local vet or animal rescue centre
  • Save items from landfill by joining the Repair Cafe community

Bulk Verge Resource Recovery

The Town is committed to best sustainability practices and recovering as many materials as possible from bulk verge collection activities.

Following collections, items are sorted for recycling and disposal

  • Whitegoods and metal appliances go to a scrap metal recycler to be separated, processed, and sold to manufacturers to make new products.
  • Mattresses are separated into parts to be recycled. Steel springs become metal products, foam becomes carpet underlay, and wooden frames can be turned into furniture or chipwood.
  • E-waste is shredded and the components are separated out for reuse. 90% of e-waste consists of materials that can be used again, like copper, aluminium and steel.
  • Cardboard, timber, and any remaining metal is also sorted and separated for recycling downstream.

By separating any metals, whitegoods, mattresses and e-waste from your furniture or general junk, you can help us recover and recycle as much as possible. On average, we are able to recover 85% of the bulk waste materials collected through Verge Valet™.
