Thank you to everyone who joined us at the George Street Place Plan Community Workshop on 29 July and expressed interest in being part of the George Street Activation Group.

We’re excited to share that Village Well Consultants have now finalised the George Street Place Vision and Community Action Plan.

The Community Action Plan includes a range of projects identified by those at the workshop.

What's next?

Now it's time to bring the George Street Activation Group to life. Residents who expressed interest in joining the group are invited to a meeting on Monday 20 October at 6pm at the Town Hall.

The purpose of the meeting is to establish the George Street Activation Group and discuss governance options, including incorporation, and appoint a leader/chair and possibly other positions.

Once established, the group will help prioritise these actions and there is $10,000 available in seed funding to kick things off.

The Town is here to support – whether it is helping the group get established, navigating red tape, or assisting with external funding applications. Some projects will be led by the Town, and we will work together to align priorities with our business planning and budget process.

We look forward to seeing you there and collaborating to bring George Street’s vision to life.

If you would like to be a part of this group and attend, please RSVP by Monday 13 October to admin@eastfremantle.wa.gov.au

Background information

In July, the Town has engaged internationally renowned place makers Village Well, to help develop a shared vision for George Street (between East Street and Stirling Highway), in collaboration with residents and businesses in the area.

Village Well will help to develop an overall Place Plan Vision and Community Action Plan, a document developed by the community for the community.

Over the next couple of weeks, the consultant will:

  • Help develop a Place Plan that identifies a vision for George Street and outlines two to four larger actions that will be the Town’s responsibility to deliver (which will then be costed and programmed into the Town’s Long Term Financial Plan).
  • Help develop a Community Action Plan consistent with the vision. This will be owned and driven by the community and serve as a foundation document for action to be carried out by a potential community group made up of local business and residential community members.
  • Inspire the community to become involved, provide a roadmap, and process to establish a formal community group to own and deliver the Community Action Plan and collaborate with the Town on delivery of the vision.

George Street Place Plan Community Workshop

On Tuesday 29 July, several community members engaged in a walkshop through George Street with a consultant from Village Well. That evening, 70 community members from around the Plympton Ward, including Councillors, attended a community workshop to discuss their ideas for George Street.
Thank you to everyone who participated — your ideas and passion for George Street were truly inspiring.

Why it matters?

The Community Action Plan will turn the Place Vision into a practical roadmap of actions that both the community and Council can champion—delivering real impact and building long-term momentum. A special thank you to those who’ve expressed interest in forming a George Street Place Activation Team. Empowering an activation team is at the heart of the approach.

For now, we await the outcomes of the Consultant’s work and look forward to the next chapter in shaping George Street together. Expect a clear and visually engaging report that highlights some achievable ‘small wins’, along with larger actions that will need to be considered in future Council budgets.
