Community voices help shape new vision for George Street

A Place Plan Vision and Community Action Plan for George Street has been released, marking the next chapter in shaping George Street together.

Town of East Fremantle Mayor Jim O’Neill said the George Street Place Plan Vision and Community Action Plan (the Place Plan) was created through hands-on community workshops and input.

“It is a living roadmap of ideas and initiatives designed to bring the community’s shared vision for George Street to life and reflects the importance the Town places on this vibrant asset,” he said.

“The Place Plan will now give the street a renewed focus and attention that is reflective of its importance.

“It captures the vision, uniqueness and aspirations for George Street (between East Street and Stirling Highway) and outlines five key initiatives that turn the vision into action.”

The initiatives are:

  • Community-led governance
  • Creating a village heart
  • Diversity and vitality of business mix
  • Walkable main street; and
  • Living history.

Mayor O’Neill said each initiative had a series of actions and activities that the community could consider working towards delivering.

“Whilst not a formal Town of East Fremantle document,” he added. “It is a dynamic tool for the community to take ownership, to spark momentum, and to shape the future of George Street.”

The Place Plan also outlines larger actions the Town will cost and program into its Town’s Long Term Financial Plan, subject to our strategic priorities, available resources, and formal statutory and budgetary processes.

Mayor O’Neill welcomed the ideas in the Place Plan, which were formulated with George Street businesses and residents during a ‘walk-shop’ and placemaking workshop in July.

“We thank everyone who has been involved in this important project to date,” he said.

“We are excited to present the Place Plan, which is a roadmap of the ideas and initiatives we have received.

Mayor O’Neill said the Place Plan was community-led. It would become a tool for community members to establish a formal community group to own and deliver the Community Action Plan, and collaborate with the Town on delivery of the vision.

Formation of an incorporated community group is a major first step for carrying out actions identified in the Community Action Plan.

It will also allow the group to access funding application opportunities through the Town and other sources.

Formation of a George Street Activation Group

Next steps for Town staff will include contacting those people who were interested in joining the Activation Group, and organising a meeting at the Town Hall to discuss the Place Plan.

The evening of Monday 20 October has been earmarked for this meeting. Community members who did not express their interest earlier – but would like to join the group – can contact the Town via admin@eastfremantle.wa.gov.au by Monday 13 October.

A modest budget is available this financial year to carry out selected priority actions identified by the community and supported by the Town.

The Plan is now available on the George Street Place Plan Project page.
