Town of East Fremantle’s investment in a major redevelopment of a community football (soccer) club has not only transformed the facilities at Wauhop Park, it has reignited pride and passion among young female players.
As part of the $1.16 million project, the Town contributed over $250,000 towards major upgrades, including project managing the refurbishment of the Fremantle City Football Club Women’s changerooms.
The Town’s commitment has ensured that female teams now have access to first-class modern facilities that support the growth of girls playing football.
As the home ground for over 20 teams, the upgrades have boasted new changerooms, player dugouts, scoreboard, fencing, an AV and PA system, a video analysis room, and a gym.
East Fremantle resident and mother of two East Fremantle City Football Club players, Katie McKeown, said having nice facilities went a long way to feeling respected, having pride in a team, and staying engaged in sport.
“As a mother of two young girls, having access to clean and safe changerooms and facilities on site just makes a huge difference. It’s fabulous seeing the investment into girl’s sport,” she said.
“We are grateful to have excellent facilities so close to home that are available for the whole community to use.”
Fremantle City Football Club President Tony Estrano said investing in the Club’s women and girls was investing in the future of football.
“With a $800,000 Funding Grant from the WA State Government and unwavering support from the Town of East Fremantle, Wauhop Park and the Tricolore Community Centre has been transformed into a fantastic football facility,” he said.
“These modern upgrades give our players a sense of pride and the tools to excel.
“We are especially grateful to the Town of East Fremantle, which has been instrumental in supporting us at every step, providing additional resources to ensure the smooth execution of this project.
“Fremantle City Football Club is more than a place to play; it’s a home where our women and girls can grow, develop, and thrive."
Mayor Jim O’Neill said the Town was proud to partner with the State Government and the Fremantle City Football Club to deliver a long overdue upgrade at the park.
“I would like to recognise the huge commitment from Fremantle City Football Club, members, players, committee and especially the Club President Tony Estrano,” he said.
“We are also grateful for the support from the State Government and local members Simone McGurk and Lisa O’Malley for this project.
“The Town regards soccer as a ‘world game’, and female sport is so often overlooked and this attempts to address this imbalance. We are committed to ensuring that our Town provides sporting opportunities for both women and men.”
The Fremantle City Football Club kitchen and club rooms are available for the community to hire.
