Rain, hail or shine, Town of East Fremantle’s Operations Team will plant 140 new trees across East Fremantle this month.
The initiative includes planting 100 street trees throughout the Town. In addition, 40 trees will be planted across Raceway Park, Lee Park, Henry Jeffery Oval and Wauhop Park.
The annual planting program forms part of a broader commitment through the Climate Emergency Action Plan 2023-2033 to enhance greenery and biodiversity and reduce urban hotspots.
A mix of species has been selected including WA peppermint, bottlebrush, banksia and various native eucalyptus, as well as Jacaranda and other shade and habitat trees that are well suited to the local environment.
Town of East Fremantle Mayor Tony Natale said the Town had invested $137,000 into this year’s planting program.
“The program is not just about planting trees, it is about investing in the long-term urban canopy and liveability of our Town,” he said.
“We are committed to reducing the impacts of climate change in our Town and our annual planting program helps to reduce urban heat by expanding our shade canopy.
“It also helps to beautify our Town and maintain the leafy green reputation that makes East Fremantle so beautiful to live and work in or visit.”
Mayor Natale encouraged residents to keep an eye out for the Town’s Operations Team who may be planting in their neighbourhood in coming weeks.
“I also urge residents to think about urban greening in their own backyards,” he said.
“To make it easier, residents can purchase subsidised plants through the Native Plant Subsidy Scheme at APACE Nursery until the end of May.”
