East Fremantle’s vibrant community has grown even richer with the addition of 19 new Australian Citizens this week.
Of the unique threads added to the Town’s social fabric, Fernanda Okamoto’s journey from São Paulo, Brazil to Perth, has added a new chapter to the Town’s citizenship stories.
Ms Okamoto said becoming a citizen represented a sense of belonging, a deeper integration into the community and embracing the responsibilities and values of Australia.
“It is an immensely emotional and rewarding experience,” she said.
“After more than a decade, it is incredibly special to finally make it official. I feel deeply proud and grateful for the opportunity to call Australia my permanent home.”
Driven by a desire to explore new cultures and experiences abroad, Ms Okamoto transitioned from the vibrant, diverse, and dynamic life of São Paulo to a lifestyle in Australia that offered new experiences and perspectives.
“I came to Perth to discover new possibilities and enrich my life experiences,” she said.
“I had always dreamed of living particularly by the ocean and in a place more relaxed than my hometown. Perth proved to be the perfect city. I love it here and have always felt at home.”
Having only lived in East Fremantle for six months, Ms Okamoto said she appreciates the slower pace, strong sense of community and access to the amenities the Town has to offer.
“East Fremantle is a beautiful, community-oriented place to live,” she said.
“I cherish being surrounded by a rich artistic and cultural environment, while also being close to the river and the beach — it is a privilege. The diverse range of cafés and shops adds to the convenience and charm of the neighbourhood.”
“I am very grateful for my journey in Australia and excited for what lies ahead.”
Town of East Fremantle welcomed its newest citizens in a citizenship ceremony on Monday 15 September. This week’s ceremony coincides with Australian Citizenship Day on Wednesday 17 September.
The town’s multicultural fabric now also includes residents from Tunisia, UK, Germany, Philippines, Croatia, New Zealand, India, Ukraine, Chile and Russia.
