Town of East Fremantle is set to light up its Town Hall in honour of NAIDOC Week.
In partnership with Yard Property, the building will feature artwork from the Town’s Reconciliation Action Plan each evening from Tuesday 8 July to Thursday 11 July.
Depicting icons associated with East Fremantle (Boyal Walyalup Boodja), including the Swan River (Derbal Yerrigan) and pelican (Boodalang), the vibrant display will mark the middle of NAIDOC Week 2025 (Sunday 6 July to Sunday 13 July).
In addition to lighting up the building, the Town is also partnering with Yard Property to host two, free craft sessions for local kids’ aged five to 10 years.
The (booked out) sessions on Thursday 10 July will see young people learn how to make one of the large water birds or creatures found along the river.
Participants will also learn about Nyoongar words for animals and critters and the colours of the six Nyoongar seasons they may spot around the Town.
Deputy Mayor Tony Natale said NAIDOC Week was an important week for the Town to recognise.
“East Fremantle has Nyoongar history, including Dreamtime stories, river crossings and hunting and gathering along the river,” he said.
“As part of our commitment to reconciliation, we are pleased to invite local children to learn about the Nyoongar culture that’s embedded in our community through art and craft activities.”
This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy. The theme celebrates the achievements of the past and the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of young leaders, the vision of their communities and the legacy of their ancestors.
The Town is committed to pursuing reconciliation with Australia’s first people. This commitment is solidified through its Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan. To view the Plan, visit the Reconciliation Action Plan page.
