After 25 years of ensuring the physical well-being of generations of East Fremantle families, a local traffic warden has hung up his hi-vis and lollipop in exchange for retirement.

Victor Iwanow is a well-known friendly face in East Fremantle. Over the years he has assisted many young people and their families cross a busy crosswalk on Canning Highway, enroute to Richmond Primary School.

Reminiscing of his career, Mr Iwanow said it was a pleasure to be a crosswalk attended for the school.

“I have seen kids grow up and now their kids are going to the same school,” he said.

“It’s a great school; it’s a great area. It was a pleasure to do it.

“I spoke to everybody and knew a lot of people. Everybody walking up and down to the shops, I would see them every day and have a chat to them.”

At an Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 16 September, Town of East Fremantle Mayor Jim O’Neill presented Mr Iwanow with a contribution to the community award after being tipped off by the head girl at Richmond Primary School about his retirement.

He said it was a pleasure to honour and recognise the decades-long contribution Mr Iwanow had made to ensuring the physical safety, sense of belonging and well-being of students, parents and families travelling to and from Richmond Primary School.

“As Mayor of Town of East Fremantle, I want to recognise the outstanding contribution you have made to generations of children, parents and dogs – because you always had a treat for the dogs at the crosswalk,” he said.

“East Fremantle is a great place but when people like you are in involved in the Town, it makes it even a better place.

“I really acknowledge the love and the pride. The kids just absolutely adored you. I can’t thank you enough for all those years out there in the rain and that was no easy crossing.”

Mayor O’Neill said his four daughters and nine-year-old granddaughter also used the crossing.

“I imagine many, many families in the Town of East Fremantle use that crossing. In fact, it is amazing how many people know you and know of you.

“On behalf of the Town, thank you and I recognise you.”
