Application to Place Materials on the Verge

What do I need to submit?

  • A site plan (1:200) (with existing building/s and scale) illustrating the verge, crossover location, all infrastructure (drainage pits, manhole covers), street trees, and the proposed area to be used for building material storage
  • All street trees to be protected with a Tree Protection Zone and this is to be included in the site plan
  • Details of the heights of materials
  • Illustrated details of setbacks from the kerb line and all verge infrastructure
  • Applications to store materials on corner lots must ensure that the vision of vehicles is not impeded, height of materials is not greater than 750mm or locating the materials at the furthest point along the verge away from the corner. This needs to be demonstrated on the site plan.

      No Verge or Limited Verge Space

      In some cases, building sites or properties located in constrained areas with no verge and only a footpath, may have limited space for storing materials. When this occurs, the applicant may be able to apply for a road reserve permit at a fee of $125.60 per bay, per day.

      The Town will not grant approval to obstruct the footpath due to limited or no verge space.

      Fees and Charges
      Permit Conditions

      Street Trees
      All street trees to be protected with a Tree Protection Zone at all times, and storage of materials shall not encroach closer than 2m to the trunk of the tree

      Should any street tree be damaged by the storage of materials, the Town may require the applicant to replace the tree, with a tree as determined by the Town, within a timeframe as determined by the Town.

      Building Activity
      Building activity on the verge area is forbidden under any circumstances, this activity includes, but is not limited to, cutting, mixing, preparing and assembling. All building activity work must be conducted within the property boundaries

      Vehicles and trailers 
      Vehicles and trailers must not block footpaths under any circumstances. Vehicles associated with the works may be parked on the road reserve area, so long as the parking meets the requirements of the Town's Local Law 2016.

      Damage
      Materials, such as sand, soil, cement, and other materials are contained and do not leak or leach into the City’s drainage system or otherwise damage the Town's infrastructure.

      Applicants must store all materials in such a way that no obstruction or damage is caused to manholes, inspection pits, fire hydrant, water or gas valve, electrical substation, power pole drainage gully, water channel or any other service in the verge area for which access may be required.

      Obstruction of Footpath 
      Obstruction of footpaths will not be supported.

      Clean-up of Verge 
      The verge area is to be cleared of all materials, rubbish, sand and the like and returned to the level and state before works commenced or as otherwise approved by the Town.

      Rubbish 
      All rubbish must be placed in a covered waste collection facility, such as a bulk rubbish bin contained on the building site.

      The permit holder is responsible for all rubbish generated by the building construction and/or employees and contractors on the site. All rubbish should be stored in bins which must be placed so they do not obstruct or overhang a footpath, carriageway, access way, or driveway
      or cause any sight obstruction

      Portable Toilets 
      No chemical toilets to be stored on the verge.
