Creativity and connection will come together at Richmond Primary School this month, with students helping to create a large-scale artwork that celebrates caring for the environment and each other.

Nyoongar artist Sharyn Egan will work with students from years one to six to explore caring for environments where humans, nature and animals cohabit.

Using natural and recycled materials found in their environment, students will make individual artworks that will be woven together to form the Nyoongar word Wanjoo (Welcome). The finished piece will be displayed at the school.

Town of East Fremantle Mayor Tony Natale welcomed the opportunity to partner with Richmond Primary School and Ms Egan.

“Through projects like this, the Town is working to educate future generations about reconciliation and our local environment,” he said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn from, and work with, a renowned Nyoongar artist. Ms Egan will teach the students what it means to care for nature and each other.”

The project forms part of the Town’s commitment to reconciliation and has been launched in celebration of NAIDOC Week.

Mayor Natale said community members were invited to contribute to the artwork by donating found objects.

“We are seeking small objects found in their environment to help create this artwork,” he said.

“Items might include wood, shells, buttons, seaglass, fishing floats and rope up to 6mm thick.

“Community members can bring items to reception at the Town Hall during business hours,” he said.

Organic materials, including feathers, cannot be accepted.

Ms Egan will work with the students from Monday 20 July until Friday 31 July.

NAIDOC Week runs from Sunday 5 July to Sunday 12 July. This year’s theme is ’50 Years of Deadly.’

The Town supports the theme by celebrating the strength, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Through partnerships and a commitment to reconciliation, the Town continues to honour the past, celebrate the present and help build a more inclusive future.
