Town of East Fremantle has today welcomed the program launch of Fremantle Biennale - Sanctuary 25.
Held every two years, the Fremantle Biennale is a festival of site-responsive contemporary art that offers a largely free program of events.
The Town is once again proud to sponsor the festival as a Presenting Partner.
Fremantle Biennale reveals and celebrates the cultural, social and historical distinctiveness of the Walyalup (Fremantle) region and will run from 13 to 30 November.
The theme for 2025, Sanctuary, invites participants to set into a festival-wide exploration of what it means to seek, shape and share spaces of care, resistance and possibility.
Across Walyalup (Fremantle) – including in East Fremantle – artists will transform coastlines, hidden buildings, waterways and city streets into living sites for art, sound, performance and connection.
On Saturday 22 November, the riverscape in front of John Tonkin Reserve will be transformed at sunset (from 6.15pm) for the free Vespers event. This event reimagines Walyalup’s waters while community gathers along the shoreline.
Vespers is a sound, music and performance piece, carried across the river and sea. It will be created for the community, an offering of quietude and connection in uncertain times.
See the Fremantle Biennale website for the full program.
