The Department of Primary Industires and Regional Development (DPIRD) has advised that the Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) has successfully been eradicated from Perth's southern suburbs.
Thanks to the collective efforts of affected residents along with DPIRD staff, and industry stakeholders, Qfly eradication was achieved on Monday 18 August 2025, nine months after the incident was declared.
The Quarantine Area Notice will be lifted, and residents, businesses and growers will no longer be subject to quarantine requirements and movement controls on fruits and vegetables.
Qfly is one of the most serious pests of fruit and fruiting vegetables in Australia, attacking over 300 species of fruit and vegetables and impacting a range of horticulture industries and access to valuable export markets.
Thanks to residents’ support of the eradication program, more than 77,000 property visits were conducted across 12,255 properties. Over 58,000 host plants were inspected and the necessary surveillance, baiting and trapping activities undertaken.
Your effort and commitment helped protect the livelihoods of local fresh food market operators and WA’s horticulture industries.
You have also helped ensure WA residents can continue to grow and enjoy fresh fruit, vegetables that are free from Qfly.
The Qfly response in Perth’s southern suburbs marks the milestone of ten successful Qfly eradication programs in WA since 1989.
