Public comment to be invited on potential fence at East Fremantle Community Park

Public comments will soon be invited by the Town to seek feedback on a proposed picket-style fence at the East Fremantle Community Park (Good Grocer Park).

The proposal has been put forward by the East Fremantle Football Club following direction from WA Football (the sport’s governing body) that a level of perimeter control is now required for WAFL fixtures to continue at the venue.

This requirement has been imposed by WA Football and not by the Town.

Mayor Tony Natale said Council remained committed to transparency and to preserving the core principle of East Fremantle Community Park as an open, community‑focused precinct.

“East Fremantle Community Park was designed and delivered as an accessible public space,” he said.

“While this requirement has come to the Town unexpectedly, Council is committed to ensuring the community is informed and has the chance to share its views before any decisions are made."

At its March Ordinary Council Meeting this week, Council provided in‑principal support to undertake community consultation only, noting that:

  • No decisions have been made regarding any works
  • The Town has not endorsed the proposals prepared by the East Fremantle Football Club
  • The Town continues to work collaboratively with the Club to review and understand WA Football's requirements

Mayor Natale emphasised that community access remained central to any future considerations.

“Our intention is to understand community sentiment, gather all relevant information, and ensure any future decision is made carefully, transparently and in the best interests of the whole community,” he said.

The comment period will be open for several weeks, with outcomes to be reported back to Council in May.

Details of the consultation period opening date, the proposed design and information on how the community can respond, will be shared by the Town in coming weeks.
