Native plants a recipe for sharing Indigenous wisdom

Town of East Fremantle acknowledges the theme “All In” for National Reconciliation Week, held from Wednesday 27 May to Wednesday 3 June.

This year’s theme recognises that reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s rights requires participation from everyone.

To commemorate the week, the Town has partnered with East Fremantle Primary School to engage native botanicals business Tucker Bush to help build a bushfood garden at the school.

A selection of students from each class will plant bush tucker foods in the kitchen garden. The bush tucker will later be used for cooking classes, and new recipes inspired by Indigenous chefs and advice from local Elders.

Mayor Tony Natale said the Town was proud to partner with East Fremantle Primary School to offer young people an opportunity to experience growing, and cooking with, native bush foods.

“This is a fun and engaging opportunity for students to learn about the varieties of edible native plants and indigenous ingredients,” he said.

Mayor Natale said the project was a great example of the 2026 National Reconciliation Week theme in action.

“Celebrating Indigenous culture strengthens our connections and creates a positive, supportive community spirit,” he added.

“I encourage everyone in East Fremantle to start meaningful conversations about reconciliation and to discover more about the culture and values of Nyoongar people.”
