A local club dedicated to retirees is offering a full calendar of social events and activities designed to keep members socially connected and enjoying life after work.

East Fremantle Probus Club Inc. has been a welcoming club for semi-retirees and retirees from the Town and surrounding areas over the past seven years.

The Club was founded in 2019 after the state body for Probus approached Fremantle Rotary to start a new club following the retirement of a previous Probus Club.

Rotarian, Garry Jacobs became a founding member and the first President of the new East Fremantle Probus Club.

Mr Jacobs said the first meeting attracted fifteen interested members.

“The Rotary Club of Fremantle was pleased to sponsor the founding of the club and donated the initial infrastructure,” he said.

“After we established the Club, we operated out of the East Fremantle Bowls Club premises, where we had a lot of fun.”

Today, the Club boasts 55 members ranging from 60 to 90 years old.

Probus is a community-based organisation for retirees that focuses on the core values of fun, friendship and fellowship in retirement.

Mr Jacobs said it provided retirees the opportunity to connect socially.

“Making new friends is very important in today’s world,” he added.

“Members come from East Fremantle, Bicton and Hilton plus Coogee and surrounds, and the Club is a mixed-gender club.”

The Club meets every third Wednesday of the month at Carnaby’s Café, Bar and Restaurant, where members come together to socialise, hear guest speakers and learn about upcoming events.

East Fremantle Probus Club Publicity Officer, Annette Jacobs, said members were known for their friendliness and inclusiveness and welcomed people of all interests.

“Beyond the monthly meetings, the Club organises a variety of social activities and excursions designed to suit different interests,” she said.

“These include tours further afield in Perth, a games morning and walking group. There is a Sunday Funday where once a month members meet for a light meal or coffee.

“These activities are focused on being low cost to appeal to many members.”

This month, the Club will attend the Carnaby’s Dinner and Quiz night on Tuesday 12 May, followed by a Sunday Funday lunch at Little Fire Restaurant in George Street on Sunday 24 May.
