Community members passionate about having a positive impact on the Town of East Fremantle are encouraged to step forward for the 2025 local Government elections.
From Thursday 28 August, East Fremantle residents or property owners interested in helping shape the future of the Town can nominate for one of five positions on Council, including the office of the mayor.
Four of the Councillor positions are for four-year terms, and one position is for a two-year term. The latter will replace Cr Kerry Donovan, who is retiring on 17 October to enjoy more time in the south-west of WA.
Town of East Fremantle’s Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Throssell said elected members played a crucial role in making decisions on services, infrastructure, development, and future priorities.
“Local government is the level of government that is closest to the community,” he said.
“As an Elected Member you will be the community representative to bring ideas and issues to Council for consideration and help to make resolutions at Council meetings.
“I encourage community members with an interest in local politics to put their hand up to nominate for Council.”
Before nominating, all candidates must complete an online induction via the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and should check the requirements on the WA Electoral Commission’s website.
Mr Throssell also thanked retiring Mayor Jim O’Neill and Councillor Kerry Donovan for their dedicated service to Council over 24 years respectively.
“The Town has been fortunate to have had such a generous and dedicated leader in Jim O’Neill over the past 24 years, including 18 years as Mayor in total, and for Cr Donovan’s tireless service over the past six years,” he said.
“It has been a pleasure to work with of them over the past three years, and I wish them both well.”
