At last Thursday's prestigious WasteSorted Awards, the Town was recognised with Highly Commended for the 2023 Community Engagement Award for our 2022 George Street Festival.
At last year's George Street Festival we again successfully banned single-use plastics from all areas of the festival and instead opted for reusable alternatives, providing over 22,000 reusable items from GO2CUP to all food and beverage vendors.
Here are some other impressive stats:
- With over 16,000 attendees, over the seven-hour duration of the festival, only 41 kilograms of waste was sent to landfill
- Whilst there was a 33% increase in attendees, general waste decreased by 17.15%
- There was an 80% recovery rate across all waste streams (FOGO, recycling, general waste and Containers for Change) - with 210kg of waste collected and 169kg of waste recovered
- Only 1.4kg of litter was collected at the conclusion of the event!
GO2CUP estimates that bookings inspired by our George Street Festival have resulted in an additional 50,000-80,000 people experiencing low waste events and the benefits they present.
The Town is leading change in the event space and is inspiring other event organisers and local governments to do the same!
