The Town of East Fremantle is facilitating the installation of a permanent public artwork within the Silas Street /St Peter’s Road roundabout.

This piece of art will be designed to respond to the unique Town Centre precinct and become an entry statement for the area.

This installation will be in keeping with the philosophy of the Town of East Fremantle “Public Art Strategy – Residence to River 2018-2021”, and aligns most strongly with the objective highlighted below:

to enhance social cohesion within East Fremantle by creating landmarks that provide reference points and enable people to orientate themselves

In late 2019 there was a call for expressions of interest from WA artists to be considered for selection to submit a concept design for the proposed piece.  Eleven expressions were received, with four (4) chosen to further expand upon their original ideas.  These four(4) concept designs are due to be received by 7 February 2020.

Due to the location of the piece the artists have been asked to pay particular attention to;

  • the materials being durable, frangible and safe;
  • a requirement for engineering certification;
  • the finish being anti-graffiti and anti-glare;
  • the final piece not emitting noise; and
  • that critical sight lines are not compromised.

On, or around, 13 February key stakeholders (the residents and businesses within the immediate vicinity of the roundabout) will be contacted and invited to comment on the four (4) designs.  The comment period will close on 20 February 2020.

The concepts will be available on the website and all residents and interested stakeholders are also invited to view and provide feedback. More details will be provided, once the concepts are available.

The four(4) concept designs, along with the comment received, will then be presented to the Public Art Panel in order that they are able to select, and recommend, a piece for Council’s endorsement at their Ordinary Meeting to be held on 18 March 2020.

If you would like more information about the project, or would like to register your interest in attending a forum to discuss the final submissions please contact the Town’s Coordinator Capacity Building, Karen Dore on 9339 9342 or via email
