SILAS STREET ROUNDABOUT PUBLIC ART

The Town of East Fremantle is facilitating the installation of a permanent public artwork within the Silas Street /St Peter’s Road roundabout.

This piece of art will be designed to respond to the unique Town Centre precinct and become an entry statement for the area.

This installation will be in keeping with the philosophy of the Town of East Fremantle “Public Art Strategy – Residence to River 2018-2021”, and aligns most strongly with the objective highlighted below:

to enhance social cohesion within East Fremantle by creating landmarks that provide reference points and enable people to orientate themselves

In late 2019 there was a call for expressions of interest from WA artists to be considered for selection to submit a concept design for the proposed piece.  Eleven expressions were received, with four (4) chosen to further expand upon their original ideas.  Of the four (4) concept designs received none was deemed 'quite right' and as such the process has been re-run in late 2020 / early 2021.

Currently (19 February 2021) the Public Art Panel are awaiting the submission of three (3) additional concept designs for consideration.  From here a recommendation will made to Council, prior to commissioning the piece.

It should be noted that due to the location of the piece the artists have been asked to pay particular attention to;

  • materials that are durable, frangible and safe;
  • the requirement for engineering certification;
  • the finish being anti-graffiti and anti-glare;
  • the final piece not emitting noise; and
  • critical sight lines not being compromised.

If you would like more information about the project please contact the Town’s Coordinator Community Engagement, Karen Dore on 9339 9342 or via email kdore@eastfremantle.wa.gov.au.
