This year, East Fremantle’s George Street Festival will sound fresh and appeal to a whole new audience thanks to a talented line-up of young performers who will take to the Youth Stage.
In all, ten musical acts will take the stage over the course of the day, with a broad range of musical styles on offer, showcasing a diverse breadth of young talent.
On Sunday 5 December between 11am and 6pm, head to the Youth Stage (located adjacent to Glasson Park) where you can hear the following acts:
Mayor of East Fremantle, Jim O’Neill, who is no stranger to the sounds of young people with four daughters and grandchildren is excited to hear the stylings of these young talented musicians.
“We, as a Council, heard strongly from our community in our biennial survey that we need to do more to engage with and support our young people, and with this event, we are heading in that direction,” he said. The Arts is important and especially local talent.
Mayor O’Neill advised that as well as performances throughout the day on the Youth Stage, the Festival will feature a Youth Zone run in partnership with the Fremantle Youth Network (FYN), whose focus includes both the City of Fremantle and East Fremantle.
He explained that at the Youth Zone, staffed by FYN members, young people can hang and chill out in a space just for them. The FYN members will be hosting a second-hand book sale with funds donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Community members will also have the opportunity to sign up as a member to the new Fremantle Library, as well as help create a vibrant community mural, guided by local East Fremantle artist and art teacher Patricia Burvill.
Mayor O’Neill said it is exciting to see a youth focus in East Fremantle, with new facilities being planned and built, including the redeveloped Oval precinct, as well as a new Library opening in Walyalup Koort that is open and accessible to all young people in the Town.
He has also encouraged the Town’s youngsters to take an interest in local issues, explaining that the Town’s focus on access and inclusion, community safety, sports and recreation and action on climate change, were issues very much alive and high priorities for youngsters.
He said opportunities exist for young people to partner with the Town through participation in local clubs and associations, volunteering, and traineeships/internships, with local government a viable and rewarding career path for young people to consider.
He advised youngsters to tune in to the Town’s social media channels including Facebook and Instagram to get informed about what is happening, including plans for Council’s big day out for them, happening in Youth Week 9-16 April 2022.
