This Saturday, 8 October, Transport WA is hosting an Open Day to mark the building’s 80th Anniversary!

Pop down between 9am and 1pm on Saturday for a tour inside and uncover the rich history of the shed and the educational courses on offer.

Opening in 1942, the Marine Education Boatshed began its life as a torpedo maintenance and naval cadet training facility and is now a modern-day marine safety training centre catering for over 12000 school students annually.

An action-packed morning has been planned and will include:

  • The history of the Boatshed and all its changes over time from 1942 to current day on the big screen
  • Display of the daily Marine Safety activities that our students participate in such as Seatrek, RST, Canoeing and Snorkelling
  • Lifejacket maintenance clinics
  • Hourly flare demonstrations
  • Deckee App demonstration – get to know its functions and ask the experts
  • Participating in the 30 Second Challenge - test your skills in a distress situation, prizes on offer for the fastest participant
  • Meeting Skip the boat safe Pelican and have your photo taken
  • Getting all the latest safety news from the DOT trailer onsite
  • Testing your skills at the knot tying station
  • Seeing an “in water” life raft inflation demonstration showcasing why it’s so important to regularly check and service all required safety equipment.
  • Enjoying a free sausage sizzle between 1100 - 1230
  • Taking a tour of the Police Vessel “Cygnet”, the Volunteer Marine Rescue vessel and our Department of Transport Patrol Vessel.
  • Watching our latest sailing vessel ‘The Wanderer’ sail the bay crewed by present day school students.
