View Terrace - Change of Traffic Flow

Published on Wednesday, 16 September 2020 at 12:09:36 PM

Due to concerns raised recently about traffic and safety on the northern leg of View Terrace, the Town commissioned an independent certified traffic consultant to undertake a review in the View Terrace Gordon Street vicinity, and as a result, changes will be made to the direction of traffic flow.

The Town conducted a public consultation with nearby residents proposing to convert the northern leg of View Terrace into a one-way street from Gordon Street travelling east to the fork with the southern leg of View Terrace. This was viewed to be a solution to the most prominent issues identified including narrow road width made worse by cars parking on the street.

Following the review of public consultation submissions received, the Town has taken all comments and suggestions into consideration and will be implementing the below changes:

  • Traffic will be prohibited from turning right from the northern leg of View Terrace onto the southern leg of View Terrace.
  • Traffic will be prohibited from turning left from the southern leg of View Terrace onto the northern leg of View Terrace.
  • The northern leg of View Terrace will remain two-way.

Why the Town is proceeding with a variation to the original proposal:

A significant number of residents opposed the one-way proposal. Under the modified plan, traffic will be permitted to remain travelling in both directions along the northern leg of View Terrace. The modified plan will still improve safety for road users as the section of road where View Terrace forks is seen by residents as the primary concern due to limited visibility and unsafe manoeuvres. Restricting access at the fork of the View Terrace will eliminate ‘u-turn’ movements and reduce traffic. The corner of View Terrace and Gordon Street currently has mirrors installed which assists vehicles travelling in both directions to navigate that corner and there have been no recorded collisions to date.

New signage will be installed to direct traffic accordingly over the coming weeks, and this notice has been delivered to all affected nearby residents.
