The Town of East Fremantle has initiated Amendment No. 15 to the Town of East Fremantle Local Planning Scheme No. 3 to provide planning controls to guide the future development of the Royal George Hotel and the remainder of the land that sits behind the building.

Mayor Jim O’Neill said that “Council looks forward to working with the new property owners (Saracen Properties) to find the delicate balance between the commercial realities of the site’s development (residential apartments) and the preservation of the heritage character of the Hotel and the Plympton Ward. Achieving the right scale and mass for the project will be vitally important for both parties”.

The Mayor further stated “Amendment No. 15 was prepared for the purpose of supplementing the ‘Special Zone - Royal George Hotel’ provisions in the Planning Scheme Text. The provisions relate to land use, heritage conservation, building height, building setbacks, plot ratio, noise management, car parking, traffic management, residential development, public art, landscaping and public spaces.”

The Town has been advised that the new owners of the Royal George Hotel site are required by the Heritage Council of WA to restore and conserve the building to particular standards either before or during the development of the vacant land at the rear of the site and this must be done before any development at the rear of the site can be sold or subdivided.
