The Town of East Fremantle welcomes the announcement by Acting Minister for Environment, Hon Stephen Dawson MLC, of support in the 2021-2022 Riverbank funding round that will assist the Town to support, protect and restore the Swan River foreshore.
The funding announcement follows a submission made by the Town in April to the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA). In a two-part submission, the proposal sought the creation of design documentation for the short and long-term future of the Town’s river walls and a river pool (for sea creatures only) in a suitable location. The total project submission was $150,000, for a co-funding agreement where 50% of funds were sought from DBCA, and 50% funded by the Town.
The announcement confirms the Town will receive $75,000 from the State Government, that will be matched dollar for dollar by the Town. Mayor of East Fremantle, Jim O’Neill, welcomed the announcement, and thanked the State Government for its ongoing support for important local projects.
“The Swan River is an essential part of our Town in every aspect – visually, recreationally, and it is key to our way of life. We, as custodians of our part of the foreshore, are pleased to be able to proceed with these plans to care for our River frontage and the creatures who live there.”
Mayor O’Neill advised that now funding was in place, the Town will proceed with the next phase of the project to engage a consultant who would work with the Town on a suitable design to implement stage one of the project.
