Profile of Public Art Raised in East Fremantle

Published on Friday, 7 August 2020 at 12:24:23 PM

On a busy day in East Fremantle, following presentations to the Premier and Members of Cabinet by Mayor O'Neill and CEO Gary Tuffin, a meeting was convened by Deputy Mayor Cr Jenny Harrington and the other member of the Town's Public Art Panel.

The timing was opportune as it came within a few days of the installation of new public art works at the site of the former Richmond Raceway.

Among the ideas raised at the meeting were:

  • The popularity of 'Pop up art' areas and spaces in underground car parks (now fashionable in New York);
  • The potential for 'Artists in Residence' in public buildings to reinforce the importance of creativity in common spaces;
  • The importance of preserving the Town's commitment to a percentage of spending by property developers towards public art for all new major projects and the Town's commitment to upholding this as a priority;
  • The importance of government commitments towards funding education and tertiary study in the arts; and
  • The importance of artisans and local arts and crafts to the life of the Town.

Present at the meeting with Mayor, Deputy Mayor, CEO and Minister Templeman were:

  • Tony Jones - Artist (Tony's works were recently installed at the site of the former Richmond Raceway on 1 August 2020)
  • Carmel O'Neill - Artist
  • Nikki Liley - Artist
  • Wendy Robertson - Artist
  • Soula Veyradier - Artist
  • Karen Dore (Administration Facilitator)

A copy of Cr Harrington's remarks are now available

"The Town will be continuing to work with Minister Templeman to seek his support with local projects and initiatives relating to the arts in East Fremantle, as these are activities enjoyed by many local residents and bring vitality and vibrancy to our community," Cr Harrington said.
