East Fremantle's young people celebrated the last day of the Easter holidays by gathering in Locke Park to try new sports, learn about volunteering and career opportunities and have a lot of fun at the first-ever East Freo Youth Meet Up event.
On Sunday 18 April, close to one hundred of the Town's young people gathered in the glorious autumnal sunshine to meet up with friends, have a go at various sports activities hosted by local sporting clubs and associations and to get guidance advice on their future career choices.
To help promote the event, the Town created its very own Tik Tok account, the first Council in Western Australia to do so.
The attendees enjoyed tucking into a sausage sizzle, pizza and homemade lemonade, practiced their skills on the half-pipe ramp with expert tuition provided by SkateboardingWA, and challenged each other in the online gaming trailer which included a 3D virtual reality experience.
The event was supported by a broad range of the Town's sporting and community groups including East Fremantle Football Club and Junior Football Club who played handball with the youngsters, East Fremantle Lawn Tennis Club who provided an inflatable tennis zone that created laughs aplenty, and the Hurricane Paddling Crew who invited the youth to have a go on their ERG and OC1, with no water needed!
As well as their physical health, the stalls catered to the future aspirations of the crowd, with careers advice provided by Lions of East Fremantle, Murdoch University, and South Metro TAFE WA.
Important information on life skills was provided by Royal Surf Life Saving WA who shared their "Don't Drink & Drown" message, while St John Ambulance offered an interactive community first aid activity.
The Street Library Network shared books with the youngsters and inspired them about life "BI" - Before Internet, while the Town of East Fremantle raised awareness about sustainability and what the young people can do to live 'green' and to inspire their friends and families to do the same.
There was also a focus on storytelling, skill-sharing and peer-to-peer support through the participation of CWA Melville-Fremantle and 3 Real Mates.
On the day the youngsters were invited to flex their selfie skills, with the best entries in the running to win a Fuji Instax9 mini camera. The main prize on the day - a $500 voucher that can be used either on electrical goods and technology from JBHIFI or expert 1:1 careers advice from East Fremantle's The Meet Up Collective - will be awarded soon.
The Town of East Fremantle gives sincere thanks to everyone who came along to support the event, and will stay in touch with the Town's young people to ensure that its decisions and policies reflect the needs and aspirations of its young people.
