This week a group of community, relevant industry and subject matter experts gathered for the first ever meeting of the Climate Action Reference Group (CARG) which will assist Council’s response to the climate emergency in the construction of a Climate emergency Strategy and associated Climate Action Plan.

The CARG was formed in response to the declaration of a climate emergency by the Town of East Fremantle in November 2019, which was promoted by requests from the community to take action locally on climate change.

The members of the CARG are a mix of expert environmental scientists and consultants as well as community members and elected officials.  The members are:

Cr Tony Natale (Chair)
Cr Cliff Collinson
Rebecca James
Fraser Maywood
Duanne Ginger
Paul van der Beeke
Christine Finlay
Leigh Nicholas
Wendy Wisniewski
Miles Dracup
Maureen Flynn

Mayor of the Town of East Fremantle Jim O’Neill welcomed the group’s involvement, saying: “the Climate Action Reference Group are highly-credentialled and enthusiastic community representatives who will give expert advice to guide Council policy, strategy and decision-making to ensure that climate adaptation and mitigation in the broadest sense is in the forefront of our minds.”

He has thanked the members for making their time available to assist Council with this important work.  The first order of business for the CARG will be the creation of an over-arching strategy to address the climate emergency, which will have implications for a broad suite of Council initiatives, followed by the development of a Climate Action Plan with specific actions on and advocacy for energy, waste, coastal adaptation, water, transport, infrastructure and urban forest.

It is envisaged that the CARG will plan a number of awareness-raising and educational workshops in the future and the community will be invited to participate at various levels.  Details about the future activities of the CARG will be shared via the Town’s news channels including the website, social media and e-news.
