The new and exciting vision for East Fremantle Oval will soon take shape with the State Funding agreement and design team appointments in place.
The Town of East Fremantle has now completed an extensive process of due diligence, calling for tenders from Architects, assessing those proposals and appointing a design team to deliver the vision for the site that was developed in collaboration with the community in 2020-21.
The formal signing of the funding agreement, that will secure the $20 million in State Government election funding, took place last week attended by Hon Lisa O’Malley MLA, Member for Bicton who has been a tireless and effective advocate for East Fremantle and for this project.
Present at the signing was Mayor Jim O’Neill, with CEO Gary Tuffin, who has overseen the entire process.
He advised that the Town had appointed:
- the project’s Architect, Carabiner, and
- Quantity surveyors, Donald Cant Watts Corke WA (DCWC), who together now have responsibility for the full detailed design, specifications, and final cost plan. Mr Tuffin advised that the first job for the design team will be to revisit the schematic design and value engineer the project back within budget.
- SPORTENG as sports ground specialists to undertake a review of the proposed design of the oval and to undertake further geotechnical investigations.
Mayor O’Neill thanked everyone who had contributed to the development of the new vision for the precinct, which has delivered on key community values including the retention of the site’s A Class Reserve status, opening the space up to broad community use, providing active and passive leisure opportunities and creating a green urban oasis.
He explained that the new facility, through the provision of a first-rate hospitality space, gymnasium and allied health services as well as club sporting homes for WAFL, croquet and lawn bowls, would become a new hub and add much to the vibrancy and health of the Town and its people.
He said the vision had been adapted to make allowances and provide facilities suitable to all ages and abilities with special thought given to the interests of nearby residents, young people, families and seniors, whilst retaining the local East Freo history and connections in the new buildings.
Further, he explained that the Town would take all feasible steps to ensure that the redevelopment creates a space that is sustainable financially and environmentally, and that is top of mind with the appointed design team.
Also present at the signing, and pictured, Mrs O’Malley said: “The East Fremantle Oval Redevelopment is a significant project for our community, this signing represents a major milestone in a process which will provide benefits now and for generations to come.”
